International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in Vienna published three reports by Alice Szczepanikova about family migration policies in the Czech Republic, the experiences of migrants and their families and about NGO activism on behalf of immigrants. The analyses are based on research conducted in 2007.

1) The policy report maps developments of migration trends and legislation in the Czech Republic from the 1960s until 2007. Recent policy changes in regulating family migration which were accompanied by opposition movement of Czech NGOs are analysed and the current policy framework is assessed from the perspective of civic stratification.

The report is available here.

2) The interview analysis looks at how migration policies and institutional practices are experienced by migrants and their families. It analyses the factors that contribute to the stratification of rights for people immigrating for family related reasons as they try to settle in the Czech Republic. The analysis pays special attention to gender and generational dimensions of family migration.

The report is available here.

3) The advocacy report analyses the situation of Czech NGOs working on behalf of migrants: developments of their relations to the state; changes due to the influx of funding from the European Union and attention paid to requirements of gender mainstreaming. The report offers an overview of pro-migrant activities of Czech NGOs and addresses a broader issue of ethics in pro-migrant advocacy.

The report is available here.
