Immigrants from Bulgaria in the Czech Republic (after 1990)

The report opens with a historical overview of controlled and uncontrolled migration from Bulgaria to the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia) before the end of the 1980s. The following chapter puts Bulgarian emigration into a wider context of 20th century Europe and then certain aspects and problems related to integration of Bulgarians in the Czech Republic are explored. The chapter “Religion and culture of emigrants” describes the institutional and other forms of the target group’s integration. The report also delves into the more subjective aspects of integration of Bulgarians. The penultimate chapter defines major problems that Bulgarians face when dealing with the Czech authorities. At the end, the author assesses the approach of Bulgarians towards integration and hints at the future of immigration and integration of Bulgarians in the Czech Republic.
