Short Series on US Migration Topics (II) by Willam Hiscott: Undocumented Children and Public Education in the United States

Around 1.7 million undocumented children reside in the United States. Their access to public education is currently guaranteed by the US Constitution. Studies have shown that undocumented children experience problems in schools similar to those of their documented counterparts – especially concerning the newest reform of US education policy, the so-called No Child Left Behind programme. This short article provides a statistical overview of undocumented children in the US, an overview of the legal situation concerning undocumented children and their right of access to public education as well as a short analysis of the new education policy in regards to undocumented children in the US.
