Women immigrants in the Czech Republic: a study

This research project aimed at mapping the labor and social integration of women immigrants in the Czech Republic. The author has attempted to answer the following questions 1) Are women qualified enough to be integrated and lead an autonomous life in the new society? 2) Is the society capable of recognizing, accepting and developing the qualifications of women? The introduction includes a brief overview of the research sample of women immigrants, which was made up of refugees and – to a lesser degree – of foreigners holding a permanent residency permit. First, the author explains the motivation of respondents for immigrating into the Czech Republic. The central part of the study describes the professional possibilities open to women immigrants considering their qualification as well as institutional support in the form of language training and professional re-training. The following part covers the social life of respondents and their experience with discrimination. The study ends with a discussion of the degree to which the immigrants’ qualification can be utilized and of the opportunities for further professional development in a situation when there are no comprehensive integration programs designed for women immigrants. The author raises the question whether the almost exclusive orientation of women immigrants on the family and household duties can compensate for the loss of all personal prospects in a foreign country. The final part of the study compares social emancipation of refugees and foreigners enjoying one of the standard residency regimes in the Czech Republic. Results of the questionnaire research are attached to the study.
